Turmites is an Artificial Life (ALife) simulator for the iPad that demonstrates how simple rules of movement can lead to amazingly complex patterns. Artificial Life simulations are at the forefront of research in Complex Systems AND they happen to be really fun to watch! The name 'Turmite' was popularized in the late 1980's by A.K. Dewdney in his monthly Scientific American column, Computer Recreations. Each Turmite walks along a two-dimensional grid, changing the color of the square it is on, turning in a new direction, and stepping or jumping some number of spaces - all according to very simple rules. The resulting patterns are often chaotic, but occasionally they are stunningly complex.

With Turmites, you can explore these amazing simulations by choosing one of over 50 predefined rule sets. Things get even more interesting when you have more than one Turmite running at the same time. Growing crystals, buzzing beehives, and variegated spirals are among the many fascinating patterns that you will watch unfold.

- Choose from over 50 different behaviors

- Select your own color palette to create your own computer-generated art

- Share images with friends

- Have up to four turmites interacting on the screen at the same time

- Rerun simulations with random initial locations and orientations
